Turf Grass Specialist
Williamson County Parks & Recreation Turf Grass Specialist
Job Summary:
Provides maintenance and care for all athletic playing fields (including synthetic) operated by Williamson County Parks & Recreation ensuring quality and safe playing surfaces for athletes and visually appealing surfaces for spectators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Contacts vendors to purchase chemicals and replacement parts for machinery; ensures purchases do not exceed the allocated quarterly purchase order per vendor.
2. Runs irrigation control tests to inspect areas for dry areas or overwatering; adjust controller start times and zone run times.
3. Maintains records of proper MSDS sheets and catalogues chemicals with proper labeling; maintains spill-handling procedures.
4. Responsible for recommending equipment and supplies for field maintenance.
5. Maintains detailed records of financial expenditures, inventory and records pertaining to applications of fertilizers and plant protectants.
6. Communicates with supervisor in regards to daily maintenance and future maintenance needs; assists in documenting upcoming events on fields so maintenance does not interfere.
7. Conducts field inspections to check turf conditions in areas of operation; records soil moisture content and periodically collects samples of soil to check PH levels as needed.
8. Loads and transports equipment as well as chemicals needed to ensure fields grow on time; obtains written documentation for the transportation of chemicals.
9. Performs routine maintenance of field equipment such as replacing broken and repairable parts, cleaning equipment weekly and maintaining the proper fluids in all equipment and vehicles.
10. Aeration and top dress athletic fields tractor/equipment to maintain proper compaction of the soil.
11. Interviews, hires, and trains all field maintenance personnel. 12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements Examples of Knowledge and Skills Required: 
  • Knowledge of the different variations of weeds and how to stop their growth
  • Basic knowledge of the processes and techniques used to collect soil data; knowledge of irrigation
  • Ability to drive a truck while pulling a trailer
  •  Knowledge of chemicals and the risks and hazards associated with them
  • Ability to read and adjust sprayer using a mathematical formula based on ground speed and fluid output
  • Ability to operate large equipment such as a skid steer, tractor, and a zero turn lawn mower
  • Knowledge of various kinds of sports fields and how to properly set them up for a game
  •  Ability to prioritize tasks and complete them with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of staffing and personnel selection
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Education and/or
Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Turf Grass Management (or related field) from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as a Sports Field Manager is preferred.
  • Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM) is preferred.
Certificates or Licenses Required:
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee and proof of insurability
  • Tennessee Pesticide Applicators License Category 3 (CO3)

An employee may be exposed to temperature extremes. An employee must be able to operate and maintain heavy machinery which includes maintaining the vehicles chemicals. While spreading sand, an employee will be exposed to airborne particles. While treating grass and fields the employee will come in contact with different chemicals.
