Aquatic Manager

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the direction of the Deputy Director of Parks Recreation to manage all aspects of operation for all City indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities.  Develops and implements comprehensive aquatic services for the general public including a variety of creative programs for a diverse group of patrons at different fitness levels.  Manages staff to ensure safe and sanitary conditions at all facilities to provide a positive aquatics experience and ensure compliance with Health Department and Code Enforcement standards, as well as all local, state, and federal laws; ensures appropriate chemical balance in all City swimming pools requiring frequent travel to inspect facilities; and monitors aquatic liability issues and establishes hazard identification and risk control procedures for all facilities.   Manages the aquatic staff to ensure safe operations and responsive customer service including recruiting, training, and assigning work schedules.  Administers the Aquatics Service Center's annual operational budget including monitoring quarterly operating budget and implementing cost controls to ensure all programs are within approved budget levels.  Develops and provides specialized safety and educational courses for youth such as Learn To Swim and Lifeguard Training, as well as competitive swimming programs.  Develops and presents recommendations for a long-term Master Aquatic Facility Plan to renovate existing pools and build new facilities through collaboration with City Building Design & Construction, General Services Division, and other stakeholders.  Collaborates with other City divisions or external organizations to assist in aquatics-related programs.

1.         Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
 
 Must possess American Red Cross lifeguard instructor, American Red Cross water safety instructor, or equivalent certification and maintain as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess Aquatic Facility Operator or equivalent certification or attain within six (6) months of employment and maintain as a condition of continued employment.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with staff, management, and the general public.  Must be able to operate general office equipment such as a personal computer.  Must be able to lift and carry pool supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.                                                                              
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed in an aquatic environment with exposure to chlorine and other chemicals normally associated with such facilities.  Requires exposure to all types of weather conditions including heat and humidity when making physical inspections of facilities.  Requires frequent independent travel to inspect facilities throughout the City.  Work schedule may include weekend and evening hours.

Bachelor's Degree in Sport and Leisure Studies or any partially related field and six (6) years experience in management of recreation programs to include specific experience developing and implementing aquatic programs with four (4) of the six (6) years in a supervisory/lead capacity; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver's License. 

The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County withing six (6) months from the date of employment.  Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
