Recreation Director, Upson County, Georgia
Upson County is seeking a Recreation Director to fill a very important role within the community.  Upson County, located in west central Georgia, 70 miles south of Atlanta has a population of approximately 27,000.  There are two municipalities within the County, Thomaston and Yatesville.  Thomaston is the County seat with an estimated population of 9,000.  In addition to these two municipalities, small crossroad communities exist throughout Upson County many which still contain local landmarks such as churches, old stores, schools, and historic homes.    The County is primarily responsible for delivery of recreation services to all residents of Upson County with the City providing a portion of the cost through a Joint Projects Agreement.  The Recreation Department is directed by the County Manager and all employees are County employees.   Upson County is seeking an energetic and passionate leader to serve as their next Recreation Director.  The current Director is retiring after more than 20 years of service. The successful individual must be a strong and visionary leader who is team-oriented, possesses exceptional communication skills, and utilizes a management style that supports mutual trust and openness among community stakeholders and City/County Government Officials. The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience in the management of a recreation department, providing a high level of community engagement and innovative and creative delivery of recreation programs, services and activities to the community.  The successful candidate will be expected to articulate a vision of excellence, establish credibility and consistency in delivery of services, motivate others within the Recreation Department and provide creative problem solving in response to community issues. Exceptional interpersonal skills and communication skills are critical in this role.    The ideal candidate will have high energy and seeking opportunities to develop the recreation team, as well as building the foundation for implementing new and creative programs.  The new Director must be a proven leader with the ability to function as an integral part of the management team under the direction of the County Manager.  A strong work ethic is a must for this position that requires involvement at various times of days, weekends and holidays to ensure programs are effectively administered.  To find out more details about the position expectations, please visit our website for the full recruitment brochure at www.mercergroupinc.com

Requirements Minimum Candidate Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, public administration or closely related field from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree preferred;
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience managing recreation programs, staff and resources; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Certification as a Park & Recreation Professional by the National Recreation & Parks Assn; certification as a Park & Recreation Executive will be favorably considered during the vetting process;
- Must possess or obtain a Georgia Driver’s License within 60 days of accepting the position.
Compensation & Benefits include:
The expected starting salary for the new Director is expected to be in the range of $60,000-$70,000.  Relocation expenses are negotiable.
